He was known as the "scholar of the family". He was fluent in Latin and Greek and taught school in Dallas Co., TX. His sister, Virginia, taught with him some. He also gave private lessons in Latin. He appears on the 1880 Dallas Co., TX census. He appears on the 1920 Grayson Co., TX census living with his brother-n-law, Abraham Huffman and was age 66. In an internet search of the Dallas City directory of 1878-79, he is found as John T. Tooley, teacher, 1st Ward Public School, residing on Floyd St. near Cantegral. Also the directory of 1884-85, he is found as school teacher. However, in the 1886-87 Dallas city directory, no Tooley's were shown. |
