Per his daughter Deloma Jane Phillips: Water attended Central High in D ansas City and worked his way through Kansas University at Lawrence, Ka nsas. He started out with a desire to become a doctor. But his desire t o complete in the customary four years along with a little influence fr om his close friends and roommates the Cross brothers he switched to en gineering.
His means of financing his education were varied. He made the varsity f ootball team first year and thru this connection learned also fencing, s hich he later taught, and physical therapy and became an assistant in t his area for the coach. He also sangwith the Madrigal Choir and he le arned a lot in high school about electricity. He also was a ball room d ancing instructor at the dance classes held at the Elks Club. This is w here he met his future wife Stell a Deloma Tuley.
Walter was in his last year in K.U. when he got married so he decided t o practice as an elect rician in Kansas City, Missouri and complete his c ivil engineering degree by corrrespondence. He became a regestered pro fessional engineer in 1908. Walter continued his correspondenc e educa tion to electrical and minimg engineering. He worked for Foster Lumber C o. for many years.
Walt's hair when a baby per his daughter Deloma Jane Phillips: Refering t o a photo of Walt at age 5 in a Lord Fauntelroy suit with long yellow c urls - The curls were discarded after one day of school. The story goes h e had the curls put in a cigar boxby the barber so he could take them h ome to mother.
