Sometimes called "Rhoda Emma". There was a certain ambiguity about her name (and also her birthdate). S he was lovingly and teasingly called "Emmy Rhodie", Rhodie Emmeline" an d "Em" by her children and grandchildren. After her mother's death her f amily was scattered, and contact among her siblings was broken for man y years and she was uncertain of her own birthday. In John Lamar's Pens ion Application, he states her name was Emma Rhoda and her birthdate wa s January 16th, 1873. Since he was her father, and was present when sh e was born, I take his data to be the best we have. Her tombstone reads " Emma Rhoda Lynch." Many people changed their names to "Emily" when "E mma" became a dated name, as her sister-in-law Emma Lynch Humphrey [J oseph Levi Lynch's half-sister] did whenshe became "Emily L. Humphrey " sometime vice-chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Thanks for your good work. - Charles C.D. Lynch Emma's mother died when Grandmother was very young, and the family was d isbursed. About all she knew of her mother's family was that her grandf ather was a minister of the Gospel. Her stepmother was cruel and sent t he children out to work. Emma Lynch had, at most, a third grade educati on. She was never certain about her own birthday. But her father, John L amar was a Civil War veteran and in applying for his Civil War pension h e records that her name was Emma Rhoda and that she was born January 16 th1873. - Charles C.D. Lynch |
