According to Helen Fern (Smith) Lamar, Ralph was a laborer with the L & M R ailroad in Nashville, prior to the families move to East Alton. Ralph w as up for a promotion with the railroad and because he could not read, h e was afraid to stay with the railroad, which would require him to read t he plans. The family moved to East Alton, Madison County, in 1941. Th ey were moved by a Mr. Trail form Nashville in an old truck that leaned t o one side really bad. Gran said it reminded her of the "Grapes of Wra th". She also said that on the trip up to East Alton, Grandpa and his b uddies stopped at ALL the taverns on the way! Ralph died in route to see his family as well as the family of his wife i n Nashville, Illinois. |
