There seems to be a problem in the exact date in which James Hammond wa s born. In the pension record signed by his father, Elisha, it states 1 882 and in the census it gives another date. I would tend to believe t he pension record first, but if this is the case then James would be 14 y ears old when his first son, Arthur, was born. Not likely. In Washington County, Illinois, birth records, James is listed as a co al miner on the record of James and Eulah's eldest son, Arthur, the dat e was 1896. He changed jobs sometime after this and became a travellin g salesman. |
