Notes

25 Mar 1787

Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina

Estate of Henry Robertson, deceased. Henry is referred to as "Henry Robertson" and "Henry Robinson" equally throughout this document, as is his wife, Mary Robertson. However, Mary's OWN SIGNATURE is on page 4 of this document, and she signed her name "Mary Robertson." Their son, Henry W. Robertson, was only four years old at the time his father died, therefore, is not listed in this document.

The transcription of the marriage record of MARY [maiden name unknown] ROBERTSON and JOHN CHASTAIN in Ancestry (original has not yet been located) indicates that her name was "Mary Robinson Robertson," however, at this time I believe that her maiden name is unknown and that the name Robinson was confused with Robertson, and was not actually her maiden name.

Names mentioned in this document were:

JOHN CHASTAIN, Sr. (NAME IS LISTED AS "SENIOR" ON THIS DOCUMENT)-- Mary Robertson married Reverend John Chastain in about 1798 in Pendleton District, SC. Both Mary Robertson and John Chastain are listed on the 1790 Pendleton District, SC census -- Mary is obviously widowed on this census.

JOHN CHASTAIN's sons by his first marriage -- Abner Chastain, Edward Chastain, and John Chastain.

NATHANIEL ROBERTSON -- his name is listed as "Robinson," however, Mary's name is also listed as "Robinson" in the same sentence -- and as the writer of this document used ROBERTSON and ROBINSON interchangeably -- I believe Nathaniel's last name must be ROBERTSON. In addition, he appears to have signed his OWN NAME on this document, and he wrote it as "NATHANIEL ROBERTSON." He was NOT Mary's son, according to her "Chastain Family Bible" where she listed ALL of her children of her prior marriage to Henry Robertson. So Nathaniel Robertson, living in Pendleton District, SC in 1790 near Mary Robertson and John Chastain, must be a CLOSE RELATIVE of HENRY ROBERTSON. He needs to be researched further.

Update on NATHANIEL ROBERTSON -- I have listed him as Henry Robertson's brother in my TREE, but their relationship is unknown. However, I did discover Nathaniel Robertson Rev War Service record at the SC Department of Archives and History -- this document contained his ORIGINAL SIGNATURE, which matches exactly his signature on Henry Robertson's probate record -- so the Nathaniel Robertson I have listed in my tree appears to be CLOSELY related to Henry Robertson, but their relationship is unknown at this time. See link for Lieutenant Nathaniel Robertson for original records I have found for him.
