No, I don't believe I've seen "Tollet" related to the Tuleys, but I have seen Tullit, Tullett and Tillet. The Peter Tuly listed by some as being the original progenitor of the Va. Tuleys appears to have had his name anglicized from Pierre Tillou as it is spelled in the original ship passenger list to Manakin Town, Va. in 1701. - David Tooley (24 Oct 2000)
My research shows that Tooley seemed to be the prevalent spelling in the late 1600's. Tuly (early 1700's) and Tuley seemed to dominate most of the 1700's in Va. (and N.C. where a lot of the descendants of the 1600's Tooleys are found). By 1800 the U.S. censuses of Va. and N.C. started listing the same families every subsequent 10 years interchangeably with either Tuley or Tooley. The 1800 N.C. census used Tooley. The 1810 census used Tuley and it was back to Tooley in 1820. The 1810 Va. census (1800 census missing) used Tooley, the 1820 - Tuley, and it was back to Tooley in 1830. It wasn't until about a third of the way in to the 1800's when spelling became more standardized, and people more literate, that the various families appear to have decided what spelling they wanted to permanently adopt. - David Tooley (1 Nov 2000)
