Glenn, Yes, I've seen the article on Elizabeth Tooley. I'm not
sure who her husband Adam's father was but the James Tooley cited as his
grandfather had 5 children listed in his will (1729 - Princess Anne Co., Va. -
now city of Virginia Beach): Adam, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth & Rebecca. The
name is spelled Tully in the 1704 tax lists. Besides James Tully the tax lists
also shows a John Tully and Thomas Tully whose father was probably the Thomas
Tooley who died in 1702 in Princess Anne Co. (will lists Thomas, Jr. and
Jonathan as children). Thomas, Jr. (along with Adam Tooley) appear to have moved
to the eastern seaboard of North Carolina in the early 1700's. David Tooley (3 Apr 2000)

TULEY, JAMES A. H 10640 PVT
From the book Spawn of Evil, by Paul I. Wellman, 1799
Ballenger led a group of men in pursuit of the two Harpes, who had escaped from the Danville jail on March 16 and left behind their three women. Two of these women had already given birth to babies in prison and the third one would follow suit the next month. Governor James Gerrard authorized Ballenger to chase these escapees, even into adjacent states.
Early in April 1799, the Harpes killed John Trabue, age 12, son of Daniel Trabue, in Green (now Adair) County not far from his father's home, northwesterly of present Columbia. The lad had been sent on an errand to the grist mill and returning home with a sack of flour and a bag of beans, was taken on the trail. His body was cut into pieces and thrown into a sink hole where the remains were found some time before April 25. The route of the Harpes carried them down the Big Barren and Green Rivers to the vicinity of Henderson. William Ballard was killed on July 24 near Knoxville. Young Coffey met his death on the 22nd, about 8 miles from Knoxville. The brothers were enroute to Stocktons Valley in Kentucky. They came upon the Brasels on July 29. Four days earlier the Harpes had crossed the Clinch River, fifteen miles out of Knoxville. James's throat had been slit and his body severely beaten. At this place in the text the words "the horse was also killed" are cancelled. Stocktons Valley, then in Cumberland County, now occupies the central portion of Clinton County. JOHN TULLY, a holder of two hundred acres on Smith Creek in Cumberland County had been slain by the Harpes on July 31. John Graves and his son of some twelve years had come from the Bluegrass that Spring . The Harpes split the heads of these two with an ax and threw them into a brush fence. They were detected a few days later.
From the book Westward into Kentucky by Daniel Trabue:
James Brassel's body was properly buried, but by then the Harpes once more disappeared. With their women and children, their stolen horses and other plunder, the savage werewolves were heading north with ever increasing desire to shed blood. It is presumed that they crossed into Kentucky, through what is now Pickett County, Tennessee. Somewhere near the interstate line they found their next victim, a settler, named JOHN TULLY.
According to Colonel Daniel Trabue-- Tully not only knew the Harpes, but once had carried messages to them from the Harpe women, when the outlaws were heading for Cave-in-Rock. Without pity, when they found him alone, they slew him and dumped his body behind or under a log.

Dear Glenn
For some time I have been meaning to send you some details I have found out about variants of our name which might refer to a London parish or even to a Saint. I am not an expert in either of these matters and none of my contacts have come up with anything. I am aware of Tooley Street in Southwark and wonder whether this is something to do with it.
The information I acquired is from a CD-ROM of London Marriages which is from previously printed sources. Some of the entries I found by using the index and some by computer searching of the document. I do not know if you wish to put the information on your website.
Still no information on coats of arms.

Dear Glenn
Yes - the double ff is common as a form of capital and the other odd items are what I picked up from what was a CD-ROM from a printed document prepared from original records. I always attempt to record what I observe warts and all.
Thanks for questioning this. Do question anything else I send you if you have any slight doubts.
