| The French King Philip II informed Pope Innocent III that Bouchard of Avesnes had already received holy orders as sub-deacon, before his wedding, so technically his union was illegal. The Pope annulled the marriage on this ground in 1215, at the Fourth Council of the Lateran. Margaret and Bouchard refused to submit and they took refuge under the protection of Waleran, Count of Luxembourg at the Castle of Houffalize in the Ardennes. |
