BENJAMIN BRIDGES, a native of the county, was born February 7, 1844. He l ived with his parents until his mother's death, which occurred when he w as six or seven years old. He then went to live with his grandparents i n Hamilton County, Ohio, with whom he remained in that, and in Clermont C ounty, for about six years. He returned to this county with then, but l ived with his father on the farm until in July, 1861, when he enlisted a s a private in Company E, Twenty-fifth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, withwhich regiment he served one year and eight months. He lost a limb at th e battle of Hatchie River, and was discharged. After recovering from th e wound, he attended school and prepared himself for teaching, which oc cupation he followed for four terms.In1867, he was elected Auditor of S pencer County, and served one term of four years. He was a candidate fo r re-election, but was defeated. Four years later, he was again elected t o the office, and held it until 1879, since which time he has been engagedinmanaging hi farm where he lives. March 24, 1868, his marriage wi th Elizabeth Cooper was solemnized. Four children have been born to the n, only two of whom are now living. They are Gertie E. and Frank Carrol l. Mrs. Bridges is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Bridges is a s on of Silas and Eliza J. (Tuley) Bridges, natives of Ohio and this coun ty respectively. The father came to this county with his parents about 1 840. He followed the business of farming all his life, and died in Janu ary,1869. He was twice married.
