According to Probate Records in Washington County, in about 1836, after t he death of Arthur her husband, Lizzie was not able to take care of all h er children. The court had her declared unfit because she was destitut e and had no way to support her children. (This was done quite frequen tly in years previous to the women's movement in the 1960's) The court o f Washington County took the children and placed them in the Orphan's a nd Children's Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Some of the children were a llowed to return to their mother after her remarriage to Mr. Sam Wetzel . ~(the 2 youngest little girls were adopted by another family).
