Egan, w as suspended from No . 24 station at 2329 Spruce avenue. Egan had orde red his driver, George E. Derleth, to trave l two blocks out of the way , going to a fire, to avoid a bad street. The blaze, which cause d sli ght damage, was at a house at 1729 Bellaire avenue. B.T. Phillips, 18 y ears old, (left) ; Derleth, 19, and Tom Ryan, 18 (right), other firemen o n duty, called a 3-man strike in prot est, and yesterday they loafed ar ound the station, awaiting an investigation by the city. Th e firemen c ontended they took the fastest route to the fire. !Died of trauma/shock caused by an explosion of a gasoline tank he was beating the dents out of with a hammer while working for Columbia Transfer Co. as a mechanic. (1911 Baltimore Ave,KC,MO) Deloma Jane Phillips believes that he consulted with his dad before try ing to beat the dents out. His dad was so drunk at the time that he said it w ould be ok. His dad blamed himself for Ben's death the rest of his life. Phillips, 21, Was Beating Dents Out of a Gasoline Tank When t he Accident Occurred . An explosion of a damaged gasoline tank yesterday morning killed Benjam in T. Phillips, 21 yea rs old, a mechanic, and blew a hole through the r oof of the Columbia Transfer company garag e at 1911 Baltimore avenue. Phillips had removed a spare gasoline tank from a transport truck and w as beating dents out o f it with a hammer when it exploded, witnesses s aid. Police said that gasoline fumes apparen tly had collected in the t ank. Blown several feet across the floor, Phillips suffered head and interna l injuries. He died i n an ambulance taking him to the General hospita l. He had not regained consciousness. The force of the explosion tore a hole eight feet in diameter through t he garage roof, whic h was twelve feet above the tank. Phillips is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Louise Phillips; a daughter , Mary Lee Phillips; h is parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Phillips; and a b rother, Walter T. Phillips of the home, 3 232 Wabash avenue, and two si sters, Mrs. Charles Falls and Mrs.Leonard E. BIOGRAPHY written in the funeral book for Benny: Benjamen Thomas Phillips, son of Walter B and Stella D Phillips was bor n June 10, 1925 near L iberty, Missouri. He passed away March 30, 1947 a t the age of 21 years 9 months and 20 days . Benjamin or "Benny" as hi s many friends kenw him lived practically all of his life in Kans as Ci ty, where he attended the Sanford B. Ladd Elementary School and Central H igh School. O n April 8, 1943 "Benny" and Mary Louise Gilbert were uni ted in marriage. To this union one c hild a daughter Mary Lee was born . "Benny" served his country by enlisting in the SeaBees. He received hi s boat training at Far ragut, Idaho. He served in this country and als o on several of the islands in the South Paci fic. Other survivors beside the young wife and daughter are his parents, Mr. a nd Mrs. Walter B. Ph illips a brother Walter Tuley Phillips of the home a nd two sisters Mrs. Leonard E.
