Head of Line |
He came from Bergen Norway to California during the Civil War. He served in the Union Army as a Subsitute Soldier. A law was passed in 1863 allowing people who were drafted to pay a substitute to serve for them. Initially, the going rate was $300, but quicky rose to $1,100 and in some instance to overs $3000. In any case, he had enough money to go back to Norway to get married. He was a painter, his father was a tailor. He married before he came to America and left wife in Norway for a year and then she came with her mother and sister. He had 3 brothers and 1 sister. The Lude name dates back to about 1500 A.D. He had 5 boys and 3 girls. Elaine's saga said his real name was Christiansen, adopted in 1850 and given the name of Stephen Martin Lude, but his baptismal record dated 19 Jul 1842 does not support that (see source attached to birth.). |
