DEATH: Daughter Sally called on the morning of 23 Sept 2001 to tell me t hat her mother died at about 10:40am in the hospice of pneumonia. Sally h ad been with her for only about 10 minutes that morning before she pass ed away as if Georgia had waited todie until her daughter could be wit h her.
OBITUARY: The following Obituary appeared in the Fresno newspaper. It w as written by daughter Sally.
Georgia Lee Boyd was born June 26, 1906, in Kansas City, Mo, and grew u p on a little farm near Liberty, Mo. Her father Walter B. Phillips, wa s a civil engineer, and her mother, Stella D eloma (Tuley) Phillips, wa s a homemaker. She was the oldest of four children.
In 1941, she married Leonard E. Boyd, who was in the Army at the time. H e rose to the rank of Captain, and served as an Army Engineer, before h is discharge in 1945, due to his war injuries. He died in 1990. They o nly had one child, Sally Jane. Georgia lived in Fresno from December 1 949 until she moved into a nursing home in Madera, Ca, in January of 20 01, where she died on September 23, 2001, at the age of 95. She outliv ed both of her younger brothers and her younger sister.
Mrs. Boyd was an executive secretary and retired from The Hartford Insu rance Company in 1972 , after working for Hartford for twenty years. A fter her retirement, she took up painting in pastels and won awards in l ocal art shows for her work. She andher husband traveled extensively d uring the early years of their retirement. She enjoyed bridge and play ed as often as possible through her ninetieth year.
She was a woman before her time, working in an office in an era when ot her women were "only housewives", being independent when others were st ill dependent, being strong when others were still helpless and weak.
Georgia entertained often and was a gracious and innovative hostess, wh ose creative parties are still being talked about. In her "spare" time , she did many kinds of handwork, and made quilts for her family. She c arried on a wide spread correspondenceuntil failing vision forced her t o switch to a telephone correspondence. She drove until just before he r 88th birthday, when her vision problems took her off the road.
She was known for her unfailing smile, and her strength of character, a s well as for her beau tiful hair-flaming red in her younger days, and s now white when she became an oldster.
She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church since 1951, and was als o a long time member of the Agapa Mariners. She was a faithul Christia n all her life. She was also in the Birthday Club, and was a former me mber of the Old Goats Club, the Insurance Women's Association, and the P ythian Sisters of the Knights of Pythias.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Fred Schiller , of Fresno and by her seven Grandchildren: Christopher, and his wife, P am, of Madera; James, and his wife, Kelley, of Heltonvillle, IN; Eric, a nd his wife, Mary, of Heltonville, In; Steven of Dinuba, Ca; Mi chael o f Fresno; Matthew, of Cambridge, Ma; and Elisabeth, of Fresno. In addi tion, she is survived by eight great-grandchildren; Shawn and Rebeca, C hristopher's children, of Sonora, Ca; Janay, Dayequana, Tiffany, and Al exander, James and Kelly's children, of In; as well as Nathan and Willi am, Eric and Mary's children, also of In.
She was a wonderful and much loved wife, mother, "Nana", and "Great Nan a", and friend, and will be sorely missed by all of her many friends an d family.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Services on Friday, Septemb er 28, 2001, from 2:0 0 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Graveside Services will be held at Fresno Memorial Gardens at 175 S. Co melia Ave., Fresno, on Saturday, September 29, 2001, at 1:00 P.M.
